SECTION A: INTRODUCTION

 

Dams are among the most important structures for the development and management of water resources in India. Since India has a large network of rivers but receives rainfall mainly during the monsoon season, the proper storage and management of water are essential for agriculture, drinking water, industries, electricity generation and flood control. A dam can be understood as a barrier constructed across a river or stream to store, regulate or divert water. The water collected behind a dam forms a reservoir, which can then be used according to the needs of the region. Therefore, dams are not merely engineering structures; they are an important part of India's economic development and water-management system.

 

India has one of the largest networks of dams in the world. According to the National Register of Large Dams (NRLD-2023) maintained by the Central Water Commission (CWC), India has 6,281 large dams, of which 6,138 are completed or operational and 143 are under construction. On the basis of the number of large dams, India ranks third in the world, after China and the United States. These figures refer specifically to large dams included in the National Register and should not be confused with every small dam, barrage, check dam or other water-retaining structure in the country.

 

Dams can be classified in different ways depending on their purpose, material, structure and size. From the viewpoint of purpose, dams may be multipurpose dams, irrigation dams, hydroelectric dams, flood-control dams and water-supply dams. Multipurpose dams perform several functions simultaneously, such as irrigation, electricity generation, flood moderation, drinking-water supply and industrial use. The Bhakra Dam, Hirakud Dam, Tehri Dam and Sardar Sarovar Dam are important examples of multipurpose projects. Hydroelectric dams are designed mainly to generate electricity by using the energy of flowing or falling water. The Tehri and Koyna projects are important examples in this category. Irrigation dams, on the other hand, mainly provide regulated water to agricultural areas.

 

Dams can also be classified according to the material used in their construction. Concrete and masonry dams are constructed using concrete or stone masonry, while earthfill and rockfill dams are mainly constructed using earth, rock and other suitable materials. Another important structural classification is based on design, such as gravity dams, arch dams and buttress dams. Gravity dams depend mainly on their own weight to resist the pressure of water, whereas arch dams use their curved structure to transfer water pressure towards the valley sides. The Idukki Dam in Kerala is a well-known example of an arch dam.

 

The distribution of large dams in India is not uniform. It depends on factors such as river systems, rainfall, topography, availability of suitable sites and irrigation requirements. Maharashtra has the highest number of large dams, with 2,374, followed by Madhya Pradesh with 1,354 and Gujarat with 491 according to the NRLD-2023 figures. The high number of dams in these states is closely related to their extensive river systems, agricultural requirements, varied topography and development of irrigation and water-storage infrastructure. Maharashtra, in particular, has developed a large number of dams because of its need to manage seasonal rainfall and provide irrigation and water supply to different regions.

 

Some Indian dams are particularly important from an examination perspective because they are closely associated with specific rivers and reservoirs:

Unlike modern high dams, it is an ancient diversion structure designed mainly for irrigation. It demonstrates India's long history of sophisticated water management.

 

Another important engineering example is the Idukki Dam, a major arch dam, while the Tehri Dam is a major earth-and-rockfill dam. The Hirakud Dam is particularly notable for its very long dam system, including earthen sections, while Bhakra is a major concrete gravity dam. Such engineering classifications can become useful in UPSC questions that combine geography with infrastructure.

 

The importance of dams extends beyond agriculture and electricity generation. They help regulate river flows, reduce the impact of floods, provide water during dry periods and support urban and industrial water requirements. Therefore, modern water-resource planning needs to balance the economic benefits of dams with environmental protection, proper rehabilitation and sustainable river-basin management.

 

In conclusion, dams are a vital component of India's water-resource infrastructure. They have played an important role in the Green Revolution, irrigation expansion, hydroelectric development, flood management and regional economic growth. For UPSC preparation, dams should not be memorised merely as names. It is more useful to connect each important dam with its river, state, reservoir, purpose and special feature. At the same time, a balanced understanding of their developmental benefits and environmental and social consequences is essential.
