Official Languages in India

  • The official language of the Union of India is Hindi and the Devanagari script is mentioned in article 343.

  • English is the official language of the Supreme Court and High Court as directed by the Constitution of India since 1963 when the Official Languages Act was passed.

  • The official language of the Union uses Arabic numerals.

  • Article 343 of the Constitution of India states that Hindi will be the official language, but English will also be used for 15 years

  • The 8th schedule is related to languages. Currently, there are 22 official languages(originally 14 languages) listed in the schedule of the Indian Constitution.

  • Classical languages because of their long history – Tamil(2004), Sanskrit(2005), Kannada(2008), Telugu(2008), Malayalam(2013), and Odia(2014).

  • 14 languages were initially included in the Constitution in 1950 – Sanskrit, Assamese(Assam), Bengali(West Bengal, Tripura), Gujarati(Gujrat, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu), Hindi(North India), Kannada(Karnataka), Kashmiri(Jammu and Kashmir), Malayalam(Kerala), Marathi(Maharashtra), Urdu(Jammu and Kashmir), Odia(Odisha), and Punjabi(Punjab), Tamil(Tamil Nadu) Telugu(Andhra Pradesh and Telangana).

  • The spelling Oriya was replaced by Odia by the 96th Constitutional Amendment Act in 2011.

  • Sindhi was added by the 21st Constitutional Amendment Act in 1967. Sindhi is not the official language of any state but is spoken by nearly three million Indians, mainly in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.

  • Konkani(Goa), Manipuri(Manipur), and Nepali(Sikkim)were added by the 71st Constitutional Amendment Act in 1992.

  • Bodo, Dogri, Maithili, and Santali were added by the 92nd Constitutional Amendment Act in 2003.

  • Bodo is the official language of Bodoland, Assam. Dogri is the official language in the Jammu division of Jammu and Kashmir. Maithili is the additional official language in the Mithila region of Jharkhand. Santali is the additional official language of Jharkhand, West Bengal.
